Institutional Set-up
US Department of State (www.state.gov) and United States Agency for International Development (www.usaid.gov) are two separate organisations under competence of the Secretary of State, whose cooperation is focused on both international short-term diplomatic issues and long-term institutional and capacity building efforts.
USA in the Republic of Macedonia
U.S. Mission in Macedonia includes the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the U.S. Department of State and experts from several important U.S. Government institutions and agencies. For example, the U.S. Department of Treasury works with the Government of Macedonia on taxation and budget issues. The U.S. Department of Justice supports programmes to develop law enforcement agencies, courts, prosecutors and programmes to fight human trafficking. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security cooperates with Macedonian authorities in the area of border safety and customs, and the U.S. Department of Defence supports programmes to modernise Macedonia’s defence capacity and enhance its capability to cooperate with the armed forces of other countries. Furthermore, U.S. citizens offer their services on voluntary basis through the U.S. Peace Corps in Macedonia.
USAID Mission in Macedonia is actively involved in three major areas:
promoting accelerated economic growth;
supporting democratic institutions development; and
supporting education of Macedonian citizens in modern economy.
