The Deputy Prime Minister in charge of European affairs, Bojan Maricik, held a working meeting with the EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, in Brussels today, where they discussed the screening process, the following activities in the negotiation process and the current political situation in North Macedonia.
Deputy Prime Minister Maricik briefed European Commissioner for Enlargement Várhelyi on the screening meetings and the preparations for the bilateral screening, as well as the commitment and motivation of the institutions for the process.
European Commissioner Várhelyi wished the chief negotiator with the Union, Maricik, a successful screening and sent a message that we remain strongly committed to the European reform agenda, as well as to building good neighbourly relations with Bulgaria and progress in fulfilling obligations by both countries.
The commissioner emphasized that now it is most important that everyone in North Macedonia stand behind the European future of the country and help in the process of negotiations with the European Union, adding that it is a process that is important for the future of North Macedonia and a process that brings a better life for the citizens.
The meeting discussed the final preparations for signing the Frontex Agreement, which will be signed in mid-October, as well as economic topics, in anticipation of the coming winter and the challenges we will face, caused by the energy and economic crisis. In that direction, they also talk about the Investment Plan for the Western Balkans and about accelerating the implementation of regional projects, especially those from infrastructure and energy.
Today in Brussels the screening meeting for chapter 24 – Justice, freedom and security continues, which will last for two days, and next week the meetings for chapter 23 – Justice and fundamental rights continue.
