OSMANI: POSITIVE SIGNALS FROM BRUSSELS- ENLARGEMENT PROCESS HIGH ON THE AGENDA AGAIN
13:36, Friday, November 29, 2019

The Deputy Prime Minister in charge of European Affairs, Bujar Osmani had a meeting with the Director-General for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Christian Danielsson.

At the meeting they discussed the situation in the area of European integration of the country and the prospects of returning the enlargement process high on the EI agenda, following the failure to build consensus at the October EI Council meetings. "I am glad by the fact that there are numerous initiatives by member states to return the European integration process again high on the EU Agenda. There is of course the initiative of Italy and Prime Minister Conte, then the letter to the President of the EC by 16 signatory countries, and of course the French document confirming the European perspectives of the Western Balkan countries as full-fledged EU members.

"We hope that the EU will use the forthcoming period to reconsider the possibility of setting a date for the start of negotiations with North Macedonia during the Croatian presidency, regardless of the process of modification of the negotiation methodology," Osmani said at the meeting, adding that the country remains ready for start of negotiations, as it was in October, but it remains fully focused on the obligations stemming from the harmonisation with the European rules and standards.

"We are ready for negotiations, as we were in October, and for us the only viable option is full-fledged membership in the Union" - Osmani said.

The two interlocutors expressed optimism given the positive signals from Member States and from Brussels for support of the enlargement process, agreeing that the Republic of North Macedonia belongs in the EU.
