The Deputy Prime Minister in charge of European Affairs, Bujar Osmani today hosted the President of the European Committee of the Regions, Karl-Heinz Lambertz, who is pays a working visit to the Republic of North Macedonia.

"Following yesterday's message from the President of the Council - Tusk, who as a representative of the central authorities of the member states- here in Skopje called for the start of negotiations, today we have the honour to have the President of the Regions, who as a representative of the authorities from the cities, regions and municipalities, we can freely say is the direct representative of the European citizens, to send a message, again from Skopje, for progress in the European integration, to support the country before the big decision in October.", Osmani stated,  expressing his personal gratitude to Mr. Lambertz in his capacity as the leader of the process of European integration of the country, thus expressing thanks on behalf of the Government and of the citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia for the support during the crucial period for the country.

At the meeting they also discussed the manners in which the local self-government will be involved in the negotiation process, especially in the area of implementation of the European legislation, which is largely or directly implemented at a local level, as well as the exchange of good practices between the European regions and cities. President Lambertz expressed satisfaction with the central government's support for the decentralization and  the support to the local governments, which he says shows that the Government recognizes the role of municipal authorities in the EU accession process and in that context he called for a decision for start of negotiations.

During the meeting, Osmani and Lambertz also discussed the possibilities for enhancing the cooperation, which takes place through the Joint Consultative Committee between the Republic of North Macedonia and the Committee of the Regions of the European Union, as part of the country's efforts to comply with the European rules, standards and values at all levels.

The European Committee of the Regions is an EU body composed of regional and local representatives from all 28 Member States which task is to involve regional and local authorities in the EU decision-making process and to inform them about EU policies. The European Committee of the Regions comprises 350 representatives elected from European cities, regions and other local government units, which are politically responsible to an elected assembly in their home regions and cities.
